From Buenos Air, the Capital of Argentina, you can take a 2-hour ferry to Colonial del Sacramento.

Attractions

Colonial del Sacramento is a pretty town with some historical buildings and other attractions. Here is a list of what you should catch up on when you visit this city.

  • Visit the Iglesias Martiz Church beside the Plaza de Armas. It is the oldest one in whole of Uruguay, dating 1695-1699.

  • Make a trip to the museums here and understand the culture and history of this city. A combined ticket from the Museo Municipal gives you entry to Museo Portuguese dating back to the 18th century and Museo Municipal on Plaza Mayor and Museo Espanol.
  • Make sure to see the El Faro lighthouse here, a significant landmark built in 1857 out of the ruins of the Convento de San Francisco.

  • A must-visit site here is the Plaza de Toros, the only bull ring in this South American Country of Uruguay. It was built in 1910 and has been a landmark even after bullfighting was abolished here in 1912. The complex in which this ring is now has only the racecourse functioning amongst a court and hotel that were here.  While the ring is officially closed for visitors, a local guide can help you through a fence.

  • The entrance to the historic center of the city is through Puerta de la Ciudadela or the Puerta de Campo – a bridge dating back to 1745, constructed as a protection for the walled city.

  • You can take some time out for touring the Parana River from Carmelo, to the northwest of the city.
  • Camp at the Balneario Beach.

Besides these, the other attraction of the city includes the cultural and theater center of Bastion del Carmen, the Sunday Market at Main Square of the city, the Basilica of the Holy Sacrament – stone built in 1808 by the Portuguese, Casa de Nacarello- a Portuguese House built in 18th century and the Casa del Virrey.

All these Portuguese architecture are now a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and with this, it is a genuine delight for travelers.
